Patricia Reinhart (*1977 in Vienna) is a visual artist living and working in Paris and Vienna. Her multifaceted work combines painting, film, photography, and installations into poetically sensuous reflections on femininity, identity, and perception.
At just 18, Patricia Reinhart was accepted into the master class of Wolfgang Hollegha at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She studied painting there with Wolfgang Hollegha, Sue Williams, and Muntean/Rosenblum, graduating with honors in 2000. Her early works earned her the Academy’s Master Class Award, followed by her first scholarship from the Austrian Federal Ministry for a residency in Paris—a formative experience that left a deep mark and established a lasting artistic bond with the city that continues to shape her practice today.
Reinhart’s works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Centre Pompidou Paris, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, Fondation d’entreprise Ricard Paris, CCA Kunsthalle Mallorca, Künstlerhaus Vienna, and the Essl Museum, as well as at Art Basel, UNTITLED. Art (Miami & San Francisco), Art-o-rama Marseille, and in the contexts of Vienna Art Week, Nuit Blanche Paris, and Ars Electronica. Her works are part of prestigious public collections such as the Centre Pompidou, Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Albertina, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts and Culture, as well as international private collections.
She has received numerous awards and international grants, including the renowned BAU Institute ART Residency Fellowship at the Camargo Foundation in Southern France (US/FR) – alongside Guggenheim Fellows – as well as the Austrian State Grant for Fine Arts, a working grant from CNAP (Centre national des arts plastiques, FR), and multiple grants from the City of Vienna, Bildrecht, and the Austrian Federal Ministry. She has also participated in several artist residencies, including at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, CCA Andratx, and sommer.frische.kunst in Bad Gastein.
“As flat as a painting is meant to be – and yet we find ourselves immersed in a lush, trompe-l’œil-like dimension that so clearly reveals a painterly signature matured through years of labor, experience, and travel. The figurative origins transform into a distinctive, abstract configuration. It is the academic tradition of Vienna, along with figures such as Harald Szeemann and Kasper König, who discovered the young artist and selected her for the final exhibition – a formative moment that continues to resonate in the persistence of her gestures today.”
(Excerpt from press text by curator Gabriela Anco, Galerie Mansart, 2019, Paris)
Reinhart’s artistic work unfolds as an intermedial fabric that interweaves painting, literature, film and art history, and psychoanalytic reflection. In the medium she developed, Ciné Collage, these layers merge into surreal-theatrical tableaux that subvert conventional regimes of power and gaze. In her photographic work, too, Reinhart explores visual codes and identity—for instance, by staging herself in Parisian photo booths, using gestures and poses that do not affirm femininity but rather question it.
Her painterly signature is particularly striking in her paintings: the orgiastic use of color in her works radiates a sensuality that is both powerful and fragile. Small forms condense into dynamic movement patterns—not as calculated constructions but as energetic forces unfolding across the canvas. Color itself—whether impasto, transparent, or luminous—becomes a vessel for emotion, corporeality, and spiritual depth. Reinhart employs the full range of painterly media: oil, oil pastel, marker, and watercolor merge in compositions that evoke both inner realms and cosmic expanses. Layerings of light and dark contrasts create depth, while fine lines traverse the polymorphic fabric—resembling circles, diagrams, or topographic markings.
